The name Bihar comes from the ancient languages of Sanskrit and Pali word Vihara (or monastery) that means abode. In ancient India this region that encompasses the present state of Bihar had many Buddhist Viharas, the abodes of Buddhist monks. Lord Buddha found enlightenment here sitting below the Bodhi tree. At the time this region was a centre of power, learning and culture. And in the modern day the ancient and cultural legacy from the golden age has become a major tourist attraction. There is much more to discover and explore than the Buddhist legacy and culture, as the richness of the state is in its confluence of different cultures that lived here.
