The name Lakshadweep, that means in Malayalam and Sanskrit a hundred thousand islands is an archipelago of 36 islands off the Indian West Coast in the Arabian Sea. Known for its exotic and sun-kissed beaches it is a sought after yet unexplored holiday destination. India’s smallest Union Territory Lakshadweep is an archipelago consisting of 36 islands with an area of 32 sq km. It is a uni-district Union Territory and comprises of 12 atolls, three reefs, five submerged banks and ten inhabited islands.

Paradise is also another name for Lakshadweep Islands. The beautiful landscapes, sandy beaches, laid-back lifestyle and the best part is lack of crowded tourists which is possible due the restrictions in tourism here.

HOW TO GET THERE:
Kochi, Kerala is the gateway to the islands. There is a daily flight to Agatti six days a week and ships, boats and ferries as well. The journey through the sea typically takes 14 to 20 hours.
There is an entry permit required for tourists that can be obtained from Kochi.

You have the option doing nothing and instead just sit on the beautiful beach gazing the blue ocean waters and the horizon.
Or you take the other option of traveling around. There are many places to visit and things to do as follows:

MINICOY ISLAND
The island also known as Miliku is at the hub for all other inhabited islands of Lakshadweep. With sandy white beaches and proximity to the coral reef, it is perfect to go out for a boat ride and/or indulge in snorkeling or scuba diving. Minicoy is renowned for its tradition dance – the Lava performed on festive occasions. Colourful race boats called “Jahadhoni” are a feast to the eye of any tourist. The place also has a stunning lighthouse overlooking the vastness of the Arabian Sea. You will be taken to the villages, tuna canning factory, the light house and for a long drive through dense coconut groves and winding village roads. The beaches have bathing huts and change rooms; so swim and beach walk , Pedal boat, Kayak and Sail .. Three tourist cottages and one 20 bedded tourist home have been constructed for the staying tourists. This island is part of Coral Reef and Swaying Palm packages.
Minicoy Dive Center
Minicoy is the only island in Lakshadweep having three large ship wrecks believed to be that of S.S Hoechst and other ships, within 8 mtrs depth on the island reef. It is believed that these ship wreck initiated construction of light house In 1885. These wrecks are virtual underwater museums and fish species found here are larger than average normal size found else where perhaps due to consumption of Ferrous of the wrecks.
The nearest airport at Agatti Island is 45 minutes travel by Helicopter or 8 hours in a vessel.

KAVARATTI ISLAND
Kavaratti is the capital of Lakshadweep and the administration headquarters for the Union Territory. There are around 52 mosques spread across the island. The most beautiful one is the Ujra mosque. The beautiful and tranquil lagoon is an ideal spot for water sports, swimming, snorkeling and scuba diving. There is a marine aquarium one could visit. To the South of the Island lies Chicken Neck point which is an absolutely fantastic place for water sports including scuba diving and snorkeling.
Dolphin Dive Center, Kavaratti
Its an ideal spot for scuba dive for beginners and experienced divers. The place is well known for turtles, soft corals sharks, rays and all kinds of tropical fishes. There are multiple dive spots and one can see spotted eagle rays, barracuda, sharks, bat fish, Sea Farns, turtles etc.
PADI certified instructors impart training to beginners as well as experienced.

AGATTI ISLAND
Agatti is located in one of the most beautiful lagoon of the archipelago. In Agatti coral growths and multicoloured coral fishes abound in its lagoons. The airport is located here and the air strip built is stunningly laid out next to the ocean Agatti is literally the the gateway to the other islands of Lakshadweep.

KADMATH ISLAND
Kadmath is one of the most beautiful dive centres in India. Variety of fishes like rays, sharks, and clear water with 20-50 meter visibility makes it an unparalleled dive destination for scuba divers. Kayaks, sailing boats, pedal boats, skiing boats and glass-bottomed boats are available to explore the beautiful shallow lagoon the island is situated in.. A Water Sports Institute functions on the island.
The Kadmath Scuba Diving Centre
The beautiful lagoon has on one side a wall like reef made of marine live coral boulders block the incoming swells of the outer sea. The water is crystal clear and fishes like lion fish, tuna, rays, sharks, etc alongwith lobsters and turtles makes it one the dream diving place. The nearest airport is at Agatti island.

KALPENI ISLAND
Kalpeni along with two small islets of Tilakkam and Pitti and the uninhabited island of Cheriyam in the north form a single atoll. A peculiar feature of Kalpeni is a huge storm bank of coral debris along its eastern and southeastern shorelines. It is believed that a violent storm in 1847 threw up huge coral boulders along these shores.
Kalpeni is a socially progressive island, however there are no privately run resorts here. The highlights of the place is food and the fresh catch.
You can see the womenfolk dressed in Sarongs, the traditional attire. You could be treated to a wonderful display of folk dance like Kolkali and Parichakkali.
The nearest airport at Agatti Island is 15 minutes travel by Helicopter or 3 hours in a vessel.

BANGARAM ISLAND
Teardrop shaped, Bangaram island is the only uninhabited island resort in Lakshadweep that only adds to its charm and mystique. Perfect for travelers who want to avoid the crowds and just want to chill in solitude. It lies very close to Agatti and Kavaratti. During the night, phosphorescent plankton washed ashore on the coral sands impart a bluish glow to the beach, which is totally mesmerizing.
The shallow lagoon enclosed by coral reef is ranked as one of the best gateways in the world. There are numerous adventures like scuba diving, beach games, swimming, snorkelling and deep sea fishing
